JLC Literacy Events

Book Clubs (ages 10-13)

Open to the public: We have an online book club that hosts web-based discussion boards to talk about books we read together. The books are chosen for this age group specifically from collections of coming-of-age stories from cultures around the world. Coming-of-age stories are stories that share an adolescent's growth toward adulthood and the awakening of their-self and the world around them. The protagonists in our stories are between the ages of 10 and 13, like the children participating in this book club, which gives our group an opportunity to discuss social and emotional concepts that arise during this stage of development. The goal of this book club is primarily to continue to foster a love of literacy and to continue a culture of reading, while also addressing the social and emotional development of children in this age-band. Book clubs are free for matriculated students and cost 5 mil/month for non-matriculated students.

Stay & Play Storytime

Open to the public: We welcome babies, toddlers, and preschoolers (ages 0-5) and their care-givers to drop-in to JLC for Stay & Play Storytime! It's an opportunity for these little ones to listen to a story, sing some songs, paint, color, and play with you in the learning center space. The goal is to provide a space and time where caregivers can intentionally and purposefully enjoy time with their children in a child-centered environment, creating a culture of learning through fun and play. There is a per-family cost of 3 mil.

UPDATE: Due to Covid19 restrictions, we are temporarily stopping this program until it is safe to reopen to the community
